Tanya Smith Earns Second Team, All Defensive Honors

DENVER - The University of Hawai`i women's basketball's senior forward Tanya Smith was named to the All Western Athletic Conference Second Team and All-Defensive team announced Sunday by the conference office. The awards are voted on by the nine conference coaches.

Smith, a 6-3 senior forward from Sydney, Australia, leads the team with 12 points and 11.8 rebounds per game. She ranks second in the nation in rebounds and is third all-time in the UH record books for rebounds with 805.

During WAC play, Smith averaged 11.6 points and 12.4 rebounds. She led the WAC in rebounds per game and also led the WAC in blocks per game, averaging 1.9.

Smith's two honors adds to her career list. She was named to the All-WAC First Team her junior season and has been the WAC Player of the Week four times in her career, including three this season.

Smith recorded 10 double-doubles during WAC play and scored a career-high 25 points against Boise State. The following game, Smith grabbed a career-high 25 rebounds against Idaho, setting a WAC record.

Smith and the Rainbow Wahine return to action Wednesday, March 12 in the first round of the WAC Tournament. UH will face New Mexico State at 6 p.m.
