PROVO, Utah - A pair of University of Hawai`i women's track and field athletes were in action on Day 1 of the NCAA West Regional Championships, Friday, at Clarence F. Robison Track Complex on the Brigham Young campus.
Sophomore Meghan Weaver, the first UH athlete to qualify for the regionals in three field events, completed her first event with an 11th place finish in the shot put. The London, Ontario native heaved 46-10.25 to finish third in Flight 1.
Arizona State's Sarah Stevens won the competition and earned an automatic spot to the NCAA Championship with a mark of 57-3.5. Last year, Weaver set a personal best and placed eighth in the shot put after a heave of 48-2.
Freshman Emily Sheppard finished in a four-way tie for seventh in the high jump. The Vancouver, British Columbia native cleared 5-7.25 on her third and final attempt. In all, a total of nine athletes failed to clear the next height of 5-9.25, except for the winner, Rhonda Watkins of UCLA.
Ties were broken based on the amount of attempts it took each athlete to clear 5-7.25. A jump-off occurred between three athletes, who cleared the mark on their second attempt, to determine the five NCAA Championship qualifiers.
Sheppard earned a spot into the regionals after winning the high jump at the Western Athletic Conference Championship two weeks ago.
The meet concludes on Saturday. Weaver will compete in two events - hammer and discus - while junior Patricia Gauthier will participate in the pole vault finals.
