Six Rainbows Earn All-WAC Honors

Trapasso Named WAC Coach of the Year

DENVER - The Western Athletic Conference released its 2004 all-WAC Baseball teams Tuesday, as selected by the league's head coaches, with six Hawai`i players receiving recognition. Along with those six, UH head coach Mike Trapasso earned acclaim as the conference's coach of the year.

The six players honored was the most UH got on the all-WAC teams since 1987, when seven players earned all-WAC Western Division honors.

Hawai`i had two players earn first-team all-WAC honors in starting pitcher Ricky Bauer and outfielder Gregory Kish, both juniors.

Bauer finished the year with an 8-4 record in 20 appearances, striking out 72 with just 12 walks. He also finished with a 3.60 ERA in 115.0 innings pitched.

Kish led the team with a .358 batting average, while adding 24 RBI, 38 runs, 10 doubles and two home runs. He also led the team with a .473 on base percentage.

The four players named to the second team were senior first baseman Andrew Sansaver, sophomore second baseman Isaac Omura, junior starting pitcher Stephen Bryant and freshman relief pitcher Darrell Fisherbaugh.

Sansaver came up huge for the Rainbows in WAC play, batting .321 with three homers, four doubles, 19 RBI and 15 runs.

Omura came out of an early-season slump to bat .349 in conference play with three home runs, six doubles, 15 RBI and 13 runs.

Bryant was 5-3 in WAC play with one complete game and a 3.86 ERA.

Fisherbaugh led the team with six saves, including four in conference.

Trapasso is the first Hawai`i coach to be named WAC Coach of the Year since Les Murakami got the award in 1991. Murakami also received the honor in 1987.
