Wahine Open 2001-02 Season Against Top-Ranked Stanford

NULL

The University of Hawai‘i Wahine tennis team will have their first test of the season against No. 1 Stanford, Friday, Nov. 23 at the Waikoloa Resort on the Big Island in the annual Thanksgiving weekend matchup.

The Cardinal dominated last season’s match winning five of six singles matches and swept the doubles matches as well. Newcomer Polina Kravets posted Hawai‘i’s only victory beating Lizzy Bennett in three sets. Kravets lost the first set, 5-7, but came back to take the next two, 6-3, 6-2.

Head coach Carolyn Katayama’s only opportunity to view her young Wahine team in competition was at the Dillingham Championship and West Regional tournaments. Out of the team’s eight-player squad, five are freshman, and although they lack experience, Katayama has a lot of confidence in their abilities.

Stanford’s lineup consists of five players ranked in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s top 100 singles. Seniors Lauren Kalvaria (No. 2), Gabriela Lastra (No. 10) and Keiko Tokuda (No. 30) have been ranked in the top 100 before. New to the list are sophomore Lauren Barnikow (No. 73) and freshman (No. 93) Erin Burdette. In doubles, the duo of Kalvaria and Lastra are ranked seventh while Barnkow and Burdette are not far behind ranking in at 16th.

The men’s tennis team are also scheduled to play the Cardinal, ranked No. 2 in the nation. Matches are scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m.
