Softball Returns to Host Bank of Hawaii Invitational

Game Notes

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i softball team (6-6, Big West) returns home to host the Bank of Hawaii Invitational with Utah Valley (4-6, 0-0 WAC) and Portland State (0-10, 0-0 Big Sky) coming to Honolulu. The three-day tournament runs from Friday, Feb. 26-Sunday Feb. 28.
 
Hawai'i returns to the friendly confines of the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium after going 2-4 at UNLV's DeMarini Desert Classic this past week. UH's two wins came against Wichita State and Southern Utah.  Rookie utility player Sarah Muzik leads the Rainbow Wahine on offense with a .389 batting average. Muzik also leads UH with 14 hits, eight runs scored and three stolen bases (in three attempts). She is also tied for the team lead with five walks along with junior transfer, Breanna Ojala. Senior Keiki Carlos hit .368 in Las Vegas to raise her average to .294 (10-for-39) while freshman Nicole Lopez has a team-high .538 slugging percentage. Lopez is hitting .256, going 10-for-39 at the plate. Six of her 10 hits are of the extra-base variety with three doubles, a triple and two home runs. She along with Rachel Lack and Heather Morales all lead UH with two home runs apiece.
 
In the pitching circle, Kanani Aina Cabrales comes into the third week of action with a 3-2 record overall and a 2.45 ERA in seven appearances. She has thrown 34.1 innings with 13 walks and 17 strikeouts while holding opponents to a .229 batting average. Brittany Hitchock is currently 3-4 with a 3.10 ERA She has thrown 40.2 innings and has struck out 29 opposing hitters with just two walks. Both Aina Cabrales and Hitchcock  have recorded four complete games and two shut outs each.

Coaches: Hawai'i head coach Bob Coolen is in his 25th season at UH with an 903-524-1 record. Overall he is in his 30th year as a head coach with a 975-617-1 overall record.
Series History: Hawai'i holds a 17-6 lead over Portland State, with UH winning the last nine straight. Last season, UH defeated the Vikings 11-0 on Feb. 15 in Las Vegas. The Rainbow Wahine also hold a 3-0 edge over Utah Valley. Last year, the 'Bows defeated the Wolverines, 17-3 on Feb. 13, 2015 in Las Vegas.
