IRVINE, Calif. - After a stellar opening weekend, University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine outside hitter Emily Hartong has been named the Big West Women's Volleyball Player of the Week. The award came after she guided her team to the Chevron Rainbow Wahine Invitational title while earning Most Outstanding Player honors.
In her three opening weekend matches, which included UH's win over top-ranked Texas, Hartong drilled an average of 5.17 kills per set and hit at a .356 clip. Against the Longhorns, she posted a team-high 18 kills and added seven digs with two blocks as the Rainbow Wahine took down the defending NCAA champs in four sets.
Hartong, who earned her fifth career BWC Player of the Week accolade, went on to lead her team in kills the next two matches. Against San Diego in the final match of the tournament, she equaled her second highest career total of 30 kills while adding 12 digs for her first double-double of the season. Hartong also swung at an impressive .424 (30-5-49) clip and added a pair of service aces.
She clubbed 14 kills with seven digs and a block in UH's straight-set triumph against UTEP. In that match, Hartong hit .387 with just two errors in 31 attempts.
Hartong and the 'Bows next host the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic from Sept. 5-7 where they will play New Mexico State, Santa Clara, and UCLA.
