HONOLULU – Tai Manu-Olevao unleashed a career-high 13 kills and the No. 7 University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team swept South Dakota in the opening match of the Shocker Volleyball Classic at the Charles Koch Arena. Set scores were 25-19, 25-21, 25-21.
Emily Hartong had 13 kills and 13 digs for her fifth double-double of the season and Kalei Adolpho added six kills and four blocks.
Kendall Kritenbrink led the Coyotes who fell to 9-4 on the season. She drilled a match-high 14 kills to go along with 11 digs.
The 'Bows (9-1) never trailed en route to the set one win. A Kritenbrink kill gave the set its fifth tie but it would be Hawai'i who would take control. A pair of kills by Manu-Olevao highlighted a 5-1 run to give the 'Bows a 14-10 lead, but the Coyotes would not go away. A Tori Kroll (6 kills) kill cut the Rainbow lead to one point and block assists by Kritenbrink and Melissa Firtko (4 kills, 4 blks) evened the set at 17-17. Down the stretch though it would be all UH, as kills by Adolpho, Manu-Olevao, and Hartong helped seal the six-point win.
Set two featured a tight contest until a late Hawai'i push gave the 'Bows the win. UH grabbed a 10-8 lead off a Jade Vorster (7 kills) kill but USD went on a 7-2 run to take a 15-12 lead. With the set tied at 21-21, two straight kills by Manu-Olevao spearheaded a 4-0 Rainbow run to close the set and give UH the commanding two-set lead.
USD hung around again in set three, but consecutive block assists by Hartong and Adolpho highlighted five straight points late in the set as UH cruised to the win and the sweep.
The tournament continues Friday when the 'Bows face No. 23 Creighton. First serve is set for 5:00 p.m. CT (12:00 p.m. HT).
