The Rainbow Warriors will need to replace key positions on the special teams including All-American kick returner Mike Edwards, who led the nation in return yards and scored three kickoff touchdowns. In addition, UH's kicking unit will undergo somewhat of a transformation after the loss of a four-year punter and four-year long snapper.
Among the leading candidates at kick returner are Chris Gant and Donnie King, Jr. Gant returned two kickoffs for a 28.0 average last season while King has yet to return a kick during his three-year career at UH.
In addition, Allen Sampson saw some action as a returner during his first two seasons prior to sitting out last year due to a knee injury. In 17 career returns, Sampson has a 20.4 average.
Scott Harding begins his third year handling punt-return duties. Last year, the Brisbane, Australia, native averaged 12.8 yards per return, which ranked 13th nationally, and took one for a score.
Still the Rainbow Warriors return placekicker Tyler Hadden, who completed his first full season as the starter in 2012, converting 61.9 percent of his field-goal attempts and every PAT. The junior from Whittier, Calif., is completely healthy following off-season surgery which forced him to miss the spring.
Joe Uglietto a transfer from Colgate and Jackson Dionne, a junior college transfer from Orange Coast College will serve as backups.
Riverside College-transfer Ruben Guzman was brought in to replace All-American punter Alex Dunnachie. The left-footed Guzman averaged 42.7 yards per punt last season at Riverside.
Scott Harding assumed the punting duties during the team's first three games last season, while Dunnachie served a suspension, and is available if necessary.
The Warriors must also find a new long snapper with the departure of four-year starter Luke Ingram, who started and played in all 52 career games. Junior safety Kawika Borden will handle the long snaps while freshman Brodie Nakama will assume the shorts snaps.
