IRVINE, Calif. – University of Hawai'i senior attacker
Monika Eggens was named the Big West Women's Water Polo Player of the Week, following UH's opening week of action. It is the first Big West honor for Eggens and UH as they enter their inaugural year in the league.
Eggens combined for 19 goals in six matches—including multiple goals in every match—as the No. 11 Rainbow Wahine opened the year with a 4-2 mark on the road. The native of British Columbia returned to her attacker position for UH after taking a one-year hiatus to train with the Canadian National Team. Eggens showed no signs of rust, tallying four hat tricks in six matches.
The two-time All-American exploded for five goals in a 14-6 win over No. 14 Indiana and added three more in a 14-8 triumph against No. 12 UC Davis to highlight UH's efforts at the Stanford Invite. Despite a 12-7 setback against No. 3 UCLA, Eggens posted a hat trick in that match as well. She also had a four-goal performance in a 16-6 win at Santa Clara.
Eggens and the Rainbow Wahine return to action when they travel to Southern California for a match at Claremont on Feb. 21, before participating in the UC Irvine Invitational, Feb. 23-24.
