Men’s Volleyball Opens At 13th In AVCA Poll; 9th In MPSF

The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team will open the 2014 season at No. 13 in the AVCA Division I-II Preseason Poll. UH was also picked to finish ninth in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Preseason Poll, as selected by the league's head coaches.
 
The Rainbow Warriors finished last season at No. 13 after advancing to the MPSF Tournament quarterfinals, their third postseason appearance under head coach Charlie Wade.
 
Hawai'i returns five starters and 10 lettermen off of that squad including its top two hitters – Brook Sedore and Sinisa Zarkovic, top three middle blockers – Taylor Averill, Davis Holt, and Nick West, and starting setter – Joby Ramos.
 
Defending NCAA champion UC Irvine grabbed the top spot in the AVCA poll with nine first place votes followed by UCLA (3), national runner-up BYU (4), Long Beach State (1), and Stanford (1). Rounding out the Top 10 were Pepperdine, Loyola-Chicago, UC Santa Barbara, Penn State, and Lewis.

In the MPSF preseason poll, BYU and Long Beach State were tied for first with 126 points followed by UC Irvine (125), UCLA (117), Stanford (99), Pepperdine (90), UC Santa Barbara (79), USC (74), UH (51), Cal State Northridge (47), Pacific (38), UC San Diego (24), and Cal Baptist (18).
 
UH opens the season with a pair of exhibition matches against Canada's Thompson Rivers University, Jan. 2 & 4, before hosting the 20th Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Invitational, Jan. 9-11, which includes UCLA, Penn State, No. 12 Ohio State, along with host UH.
