Former Rainbow Warrior Signs Pro Contract With European Squad

Former University of Hawai`i men's basketball player Bill Amis has signed with Trefl Sopot in the Polish Basketball League, the highest level basketball league in Poland.

The 6-9 power forward signed a one-year deal with an option for a second season. The team is based in Sopot, Poland, and plays in the 13,000-seat Ergo Arena. Trefl Sopot has made the league semifinals in each of the last two seasons, while losing in the qualifying round of the 2010-11 EuroChallenge. Former Rainbow Warrior standout Michael Keubler has played in the the same league the last few years and was a member of a PGE Turow squad that advanced to the league finals last year.

Amis a three-year letterwinner for the Rainbow Warriors, overcame numerous injuries to enjoy a solid career at UH. Last year he came back from an early-season foot injury to be the driving force in UH's late-season success. The senior averaged 15.2 ppg and 7.8 rpg an shot 55 percent from the floor in helping UH to a berth in the College Insider.com Postseason Tournament. Amis was selected to the all-WAC second team and earned the Art Woolaway Award as the team's most outstanding player by season's end. He finished his career ranked fifth all-time at UH in blocked shots.

Amis, who earned a degree in communications from UH last December, garnered an NBA workout earlier this summer with his hometown Oklahoma City Thunder, before making his way to Europe.
