Lum, Shimabukuro Earn All-WAC Honors

FRESNO, Calif. – The 2011 women's soccer All-WAC teams were announced Wednesday night at the league's annual banquet, as selected by the conference's eight head coaches. A pair of Rainbow Wahine earned recognition as senior defender Brittani Lum and junior forward Skye Shimabukuro were each named to the second team.

The pair led UH to a tie for third-place in the WAC standings, the team's highest finish in three years. They also helped key UH's home upsets of top teams Utah State and Fresno State while keeping the team in championship contention until the final weekend of the regular-season.

Lum, a native of Folsom, Calif., leads the team in scoring with five goals and scored the golden goal in a 2-1 double-overtime upset of Utah State in the WAC opener. The 5-4 defender was named WAC Player of the Week for her efforts that weekend. Lum also helped the UH defense post three shutouts in league play.

Shimabukuro, meanwhile,  earned all-WAC recognition for the first time. The forward from Kalaheo, Kaua'i, is second on the team with three goals, two of which have been game-winners in WAC play. Her first-half strike against Fresno State helped lift UH to a 3-0 win over the Bulldogs, while she also notched the game-winner in UH's regular-season finale at Louisiana Tech, converting on a penalty kick to secure a 1-0 overtime victory.

WAC regular season champion Utah State led all teams with five players on the conference first team, as well as two players on the second team. The Aggies also won all four of the end-of-season awards.

UH will face No. 6 seed New Mexico State in the opening round of the 2011 WAC Tournament Thursday, Nov. 3 at  2:30 p.m. PT (11:30 a.m. HT). The winner of the match will face host and No. 2 seed Fresno State in the semifinals on Friday.
