HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i Warrior football team returns to Aloha Stadium for the first time in 36 days when it hosts Fresno State, Saturday, Oct. 10. Kick-off for the Western Athletic Conference match-up between the two rivals is 5:05 p.m. Fans are encouraged to wear green shirts to the game.
The Warriors (2-2, 0-1 WAC) opened the season at home before playing three consecutive road games at Washington State in Seattle, at UNLV, and at Louisiana Tech. It marked the first time since 1964 that the Warriors played three straight on the road and the second longest span between home games in the country this season.
UH is coming off a disappointing 27-6 loss to Louisiana Tech, which snapped Hawai'i's streak of 62 consecutive games scoring a touchdown. In the loss, the Warriors lost quarterback
Greg Alexander for the season with a knee injury. The senior entered the game as the nation's leader in total offense and also ranked in the top five in passing average and passing efficiency.
The Warriors will turn to transfer
Bryant Moniz, a Leilehua High School graduate, who spent the 2007 season at Fresno City College. Moniz started the season as the team's third string quarterback but injuries to Alexander and backup
Brent Rausch will force Moniz to make his first career start. Sophomore
Shane Austin will serve as Moniz's backup.
Fresno State (1-3, 0-1) has lost three straight since a season-opening win over UC Davis. The Bulldogs suffered road losses at Wisconsin and Cincinnati and dropped its WAC opener to Boise State in Fresno.
The two teams have played 41 all-time games and the series is tied 20-20-1. UH owns a 14-9 edge in Honolulu.
