HONOLULU – The University of Hawai`i Warrior football team dropped its third straight game with a 42-17 loss to Fresno State on a rainy Saturday night at Aloha Stadium. UH fell to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in the Western Athletic Conference.
The Bulldogs scored the first three touchdowns of the game and never looked back in defeating the Warriors for the first time since 2005. UH, meanwhile dropped consecutive WAC games for the first time since 2005 and lost three straight games for the first time since the 2000 season.
Fresno State entered the game with one of the most vaunted rushing attacks in the country, but built their lead on a balanced attack. Ryan Colburn completed 11-of 13 passes for 110 yards and two touchdowns and the Bulldog running backs racked up 139 yards and two touchdowns as Fresno State led 28-3 at the half. The Bulldogs led 42-3 entering the fourth quarter before UH scored a pair of touchdowns in the final seven minutes of the game.
Sophomore
Bryant Moniz, making his first career start at quarterback for UH, finished 24-of-52 for 283 yards and two touchdowns. Junior wide receiver
Rodney Bradley hauled in seven catches for a team-high 94 yards.
UH turned the ball three times and Fresno State turned that into 21 points, including a touchdown late in the first half after a muffed UH punt. Despite moving the ball, the UH offense struggled to score most of the game. They finally broke through in the fourth quarter and ended a seven quarter scoring drought when Moniz hit
Greg Salas for a 5-yard reception with 7:25 remaining in the game. Salas fumbled the ball into the endzone where
Jon Medeiros pounced on the ball for the touchdown. The Warriors would score minutes later on a Bradley 4-yard toss from Moniz.
Ryan Mathews led the Bulldogs rushing attack with 149 yards and one touchdown on 24 carries.
UH next heads to Idaho for a WAC road contest on Saturday, Oct. 17. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. PT (11:00 a.m. HT) at the Kibbie Dome.
