IRVINE, Calif. – University of Hawai'i beach volleyball players
Morgan Martin and
Lea Monkhouse were named the Big West Pairs Team of the Week for the third time in the last four weeks after a strong performance at the Big West Challenge this past weekend in Northern California.
Playing all their matches at the No. 2 flight, the pair helped UH go undefeated in the tournament, including big wins over Top 10 squads Long Beach State and Cal Poly. Martin and Monkhouse stepped up when it mattered the most. The duo clinched UH's 4-1 win over No. 6 Cal Poly with a three-set victory over the previously undefeated Samantha Manley and Emily Sonny. They also defeated fifht-ranked LBSU's No. 2 pair in a three-setter to secure the program's first-ever sweep of the 49ers.
Martin (So., Mission Viejo, Calif.) and Monkhouse (Fr., Mississauga, Canada) are 22-3 overall on the season and undefeated (7-0) at the No. 2 flight. The duo has won 16 of their last 17 matches and have been a key to UH's school-record 18 match win streak.
After two straight weeks of road matches, the SandBows will be home for the entire month of April, beginning this weekend with the Queen's Cup. UH will host Loyola Marymount, Utah and Washington in the two-day tournament, April 7-8, at Queen's Beach.
