HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team held its annual intrasquad scrimmage on Saturday at the Stan Sheriff Center with the White team prevailing over the Green in four sets, 22-25, 25-23, 26-24, 25-22.
 
The scrimmage was a tight battle between the two units with several players flipping sides throughout the match. Junior middle hitter Emily Maglio led all players with 21 kills and 16 blocks and senior opposite Nikki Taylor finished the match with 20 kills, four blocks, six digs and two service aces for the Green. Three other Rainbow Wahine finished with double-digit kills—redshirt freshman middle Natasha Burns put down 16 kills and 11 blocks while sophomore outside hitter McKenna Granato added 12 kills, five blocks and seven digs and freshman outside hitter Kirsten Sibley notched 10 kills, three blocks and three digs.
 
The first set was a see-saw battle with momentum swinging both ways early. The Green started the match on a 6-0 run behind the jump serving of Tayler Higgins. The White team, however regrouped to battle back to overtake the Green on a 7-0 run of their own with Kendra Koelsch behind the service line for an 11-8 lead. The Green team ended up pulling away to capture the first set though, winning 25-22. Taylor and McKenna Granato led the Green with four kills apiece while Maglio paced the White with four kills as well.
 
The White however evened the match at a set each with a close 25-23 win in the second set. Neither team was able to get more than a two point lead with the set seeing nine lead changes and 16 ties. But the White pulled it out in the end, scoring four of the last five points to knot the match at 1-1. Though two sets, Maglio led both sides with 10 kills with Taylor right behind at nine kills.
 
Set three was also evenly matched with 12 ties but just four lead changes. The Green led through much of the set, but in the end, the White edged out their counterparts, 26-24. The White team led all but one point in the final set. White never got more than a four point lead, but held the Green at bay down the stretch for the four-set win.
 
Playing for both teams, senior setter Higgins recorded 45 assists while rookie Norene Iosia dished out 37 assists. Savanah Kahakai tallied 19 digs with Kalei Greeley adding 16 digs.
 
It was the first action on the Teraflex for five Rainbow Wahine—redshirt freshman Burns and incoming freshmen Iosia, Sibley, Rika Okino, and Emma Smith.
 
The Rainbow Wahine kick off the 2016 season with the Chevron Rainbow Wahine Invitational from August 26-28. No. 6 Hawai'i's first opponent is No. 4 Wisconsin at 7:00 p.m. Prior to that match, Kansas State will take on Arizona at 4:45 pm.
