Shawlina Segovia came off the bench to score a career-high 17 points and was one of four UH players to score in double figures on Saturday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Hawai`i came out firing in the first half, jumping out to as big as an eight point lead (in the first four minutes, 14-6. But UH's fast start did not phase the Cardinal as they started chipping away. Stanford eventually caught the 'Bows, tying the score at 22-22 with 10 minutes left in the half. The two teams traded leads five times with five lead changes in the first 20 minutes. Stanford then took control of the game, going on a 20-to-4 run to give themselves a 15-point lead with 1:26 left on the clock. Stanford went into halftime with a 48-34 lead.
In the second half, the Cardinal held a double digit lead for the first six minutes, but then Hawai`i started to make a run, scoring seven straight unanswered points to cut their deficit to six points, trailing 59-53. That would be as close as UH would get as Stanford scored back-to-back 3-pointers by Amber Orrange and Katie Samuelson and a layup by Kaylee Johnson to push their lead back to 11 points with 8:16 left in the game. The Cardinal never looked back holding the 'Bows at bay the rest of the way.
Hawai`i actually outscored Stanford in the second half, 39-38, and committed a season-low seven turnovers in the game. After shooting a season-low, 52.2% from the free throw line, the 'Bows shot a season-high, 83.9 from the charity stripe tonight. The Cardinal edged the Rainbow Wahine on the glass, 34-to-31, but the 'Bows outscored Stanford in the paint 26-to-24; in points off of turnovers 16-to-9; and in bench scoring 29-to-14.
Segovia went 5-for-9 from the floor to lead –including going 4-for-5 from beyond the 3-point arch and 3-for-4 from the free throw line. She also pulled down four rebounds and an assist in 27 minutes of action.
Destiny King scored 13 points with five rebounds and an assist while
Ashleigh Karaitiana and
Morgan Mason both added 11 points. Karaitiana also had a career-high seven steals to go with four rebonds and two assists. Mason had a team-high three assists, two rebounds and was 7-of-8 in free throws.
Sarah Toeaina came off the bench to play quality minutes, scoring six points with a team- and career-high seven rebounds.
Stanford was led by Lili Thompson who scored a game-high 26 points and was 6-of-7 from three-point land. The Cardinal also had four players in double-figures with Amber Orrange with 19 points, Erica McCall with 11 and Kaylee Johnson at 10 points.
At halftime, head coach
Laura Beeman dedicated the game to former Hawai`i Congress woman, Patsy Mink for authoring the Women's Educational Equality Act—better known as the Title IX Amendment of Higher Education. Earlier this week Mink was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama. Members of the first Rainbow Wahine basketball team from 1974-75 and the first UH women's basketball head coach Patsy Dung accepted an autographed basketball from the current team on Mink's behalf.
The tournament concludes on Sunday with Stanford taking on Prairie View A&M at 2:00 p.m. and then Hawai`i battling No. 11/12 North Carolina at 4:30 p.m.
