HONOLULU – University of Hawai'i head men's volleyball coach
Charlie Wade announced the 2015 signing class which includes six high school seniors – James Anastassiades (Huntington Beach, Calif.), Patrick Gasman (Clovis, Calif.), Brandon Rattray (San Diego, Calif.), Brett Rosenmeier (Virginia Beach, Va.), Dalton Solbrig (Lidenhurst, Ill.), and Joe Worsley (Moraga, Calif.)
Among the class are three members of the U.S. Boys' Youth National Team – Gasman, Rosenmeier, and Worsley – who represented the U.S. and took the gold medal at the 2014 NORCECA Under-19 Continental Championship and will compete in the World Championships in 2015. In addition, the three along with Solbrig were among USA Volleyball's Boys' Select A1 team which competed in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., in 2013.
"Our 2015 recruiting class is a great collection of talented athletes and exceptional students," Wade said. "We were able to fulfill our needs at setter, outside hitter and middle with players we had rated among the best in this class. Each has an impressive resume as a player, and shares our belief that the University of Hawai'i is the best option for those looking to combine elite Division I athletics, study at a top level university, be a part of a culture that is committed to winning, all while living in the best place on the planet."
At 6-foot-9, Gasman played both middle blocker and opposite at Buchanan High School in Clovis, Calif. He also played for Pacific Rim Volleyball Academy where he helped the club to the Junior Nationals championship in 2014 and a fifth place finish in 2013. While at Buchanan, he was selected all-tournament in the "Best of the West" Tournament and Karch Kiraly Tournament of Champions.
Rosenmeier, a 6-foot-5 opposite out of Frank Cox High School in Virginia, played club ball for Coastal VC and was a member of the team that finished runner-up at Junior Nationals in 2012. His club teams also placed third in 2013 and fifth in 2014 while Rosenmeier earned all-tournament honors both years. At Cox HS, he led his team to a state championship in 2012 and was named the state of Virginia's best male volleyball player in 2014.
Worsley, a 6-foot setter from Moraga, Calif., starred at Campolindo High School. He was teammates with Gasman at Pacific Rim and was named MVP of the 2014 Junior Nationals tournament. At Campolindo, Worsley was a two-time all-league and all-conference selection and a Top 50 athlete in the Bay Area by Sportstars Magazine. He played libero with the U.S. Youth National Team but will compete at setter at UH.
Solbrig, a 6-foot-6 outside hitter from Lakes Community High School in Lidenhurst, Ill., also plays club ball for Adversity VBC. A four-year varsity letterman and captain, Solbrig earned all-area honors during his sophomore and junior seasons and was an AP Scholar-athlete and won the Academic Achievement all four years of high school.
After relocating to the United States from his native Cyrus in 2014, Anastassiades attended Huntington Beach High School in California. He is a member of the Cyprus Youth, Junior, and Senior National teams since 2012. In Cyprus, he played club ball with Anorthosis VC where he was the MVP of the U16 national championship squads in 2013 and '14. He also was a member of Anorthosis' men's team which captured the national and cup titles in 2014. At Lanitio Lyceum High School, Anastassiades helped the school capture national titles in 2013 and '14 and a sixth place finish at theWorld Championship in 2014.
Rattray, a 6-foot-5 outside hitter from Bernardo High School in San Diego, Calif., is four-sport standout, and was a three-year starter on the varsity boys' volleyball squad. He led the San Diego County in in kills with 447 in 2014 which ranked second among all juniors nationally. The first-team all-league honoree was named his school's Offensive Player of the Year in 2014 and he helped Seaside Volleyball Club qualify for the Open Division at Junior Nationals in each of the past two years.
