VIDEO: Game Highlights
HONOLULU – In a heart-stopping finish Boise State clipped Hawai'i, 62-61, in the first round of the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic Sunday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Rainbow Warriors saw their five-game win streak come to a close and dropped to 7-3 on the season.
Despite a tough effort against a quality opponent, the Rainbow Warriors were relegated to the consolation bracket of the tournament for the fourth straight year and will face Saint Mary's, an upset victim to South Carolina. Tipoff will be at 6:30 p.m. on Monday night.
Anthony Drimic scored a game-high 21 points, including the go-ahead three-pointer with one minute remaining to lift Boise State (9-2) to the win and move the Broncos to the semifinals where they will face South Carolina (4:00 pm.).
Brandon Spearman led UH with a season-high 17 points.
Keith Shamburger added 13 points and five assists, while
Isaac Fotu chipped in 12.
Drimic's three-pointer gave the Broncos a 62-60 lead just moments after a Shamburger free throw gave UH a brief lead one-point.
Quincy Smith made one-of-two free throws to make it 62-61 with 8.7 seconds left. After Boise State missed the front-end of a one-and-one, UH had one last chance as
Garrett Nevels raced up the court and heaved a running three-pointer that fell just off the mark at the buzzer.
Both teams entered the game among the top scoring offenses in the nation, but it turned out to be a slugfest. The first half was particularly sloppy with the team's combining for 21 turnovers. UH got off to a slow start but eventually took its first lead late in the first half as there were nearly a half dozen lead changes in the final five minutes. UH clung to a 32-31 lead heading into the locker room.
The second half continued to be back-and-forth with four ties and five lead changes. An 8-0 run by the Broncos gave them a 54-48 lead with five minutes remaining, but UH scored six straight points to make it 54-54 and set up the dramatic final minutes of action.
