HONOLULU –
Matt Sisto delivered an impressive performance on opening day, as the University of Hawai'i Rainbow baseball team opened the season with a 4-1 win over No. 27 Oregon in front of a standing room only crowd.
Sisto (1-0) pitched seven strong innings in his second opening day start against Oregon. He allowed no runs on two hits while walking just two batters. Pi'ikea Kitamura batted 2-3,
Breland Almadova posted two hits and one run, and
Collin Bennett added one hit and two RBI.
Oregon starter Alex Keudell (0-1) was tagged with the loss, allowing one run (unearned) on four hits in four innings. Thomas Walker led the Ducks at the plate with a 2-4 performance.
The Ducks threatened in the ninth inning, but could not overcome a solid outing by Sisto and timely hitting by the Rainbows. UH got on board in the third inning when Bennett drove a pitch to right field, sending Almadova home from second.
UH plated another run in the fifth inning, then added two more one inning later to take a 4-0 lead.
Stephen Ventimilia (1-3, 1 R, 1 RBI) drew a bases loaded walk from OU relief pitcher Jordan Spencer, then Bennett grabbed his second RBI on a sacrifice fly scoring
Kaeo Aliviado (1 R) from third.
The broke up the shutout in the ninth inning, but
Jesse Moore, in relief of
Brent Harrison, came on and picked up the save.
The game was a sell out with a turnstile count of 3,553.
The 'Bows and Ducks continue their series Saturday at 6:05 p.m.
