HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i baseball team lost to Texas today, 4-3. The game was the series finale for both teams, as the Rainbows fall to 3-4 overall with UT improving to 5-3. Jesse Moore (0-1) was tagged with the loss for the 'Bows, with Sam Stafford (1-0) earning the win for the Longhorns.

The game ended on a line drive double play by Conner George to Longhorn pitcher Keifer Nuncio. Nuncio doubled up Jeffrey Van Doornum at first base to end the game.

Kolten Wong batted 3-5 to lead Hawai'i, with Van Doornum adding two hits, one run, and one RBI. Mark Payton batted 2-4 with one run to lead the Longhorns.

Texas got on the scoreboard first, as Jordan Etier (1-4, 1 R) came home from third base in the third inning on a sacrifice fly from Brandon Loy (1-3, 1 RBI). The Longhorns tacked on two more runs one inning later. An error by Wong and an RBI-single by Tant Shepherd (1-4, 1 RBI) gave Texas a 3-0 lead. The 'Bows threatened in the bottom of the fifth but were unable to put up any runs. Hawai'i loaded the bases with no outs, but Stafford proceeded to strike out three consecutive batters to end the inning.

In the eighth inning, UH finally got on the scoreboard when Pi'ikea Kitamura (1-3, 1 R, 2 RBI) hit a two-run homerun over the left field wall. The roundtripper was UH's first of the season, and cut the Longhorn lead to 4-2. Van Doornum's base hit in the ninth inning cut the lead to one run, but the subsequent double play ended the game.

There were 3,907 tickets issued for the contest and a turnstile count of 2,811.

UH next takes to the road for the first time this season. The 'Bows begin a four-game series at Loyola Marymount on Thursday, March 3. First pitch of game one is set for 1:00 Pacific Time.
