Four UH Track Athletes Among USTFCCCA Scholar Athletes

NEW ORLEANS – Four University of Hawai'i track and field athletes were among a record 531 NCAA Division I athletes representing 146 collegiate programs as the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced its All-Academic team.

Multi-event athlete Annett Wichmann and high jumper Emily Sheppard are UH's first two four-time recipients. Pole vaulter Jessica Custance was named the all-academic team for the third year while high jumper Amber Kaufman earned her first recognition.

Last month, Wichmann was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America first team, becoming just the sixth UH athlete to do so. She was also a three-time CoSIDA Academic All-District selection and four-time all-WAC honoree.

Nebraska led all institutions with 19 student-athletes on the All-Academic team followed by Brigham Young and Oregon, who each had 16 student-athletes honored. The Pac-10 led all conferences with 56 selections, with the Big 12 following closely with 50 selections. The Southeastern Conference had 48 women's student-athletes earn All-Academic honors.

The USTFCCCA honors Division I individuals for their academic and athletic achievements during the indoor and outdoor track and field seasons.

To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met either the NCAA Division I Indoor automatic or provisional qualifying standard or the NCAA Division I Outdoor regional or national qualifying standard in their respective event.

The USTFCCCA also announced its Outdoor Track Scholar Athlete of the Year (Jenny Barringer of Colorado), Indoor Track Scholar Athlete of the Year (Sarah Bowman of Tennessee), Indoor Field Scholar Athlete of the Year (Kylie Hutson of Indiana State), and Outdoor Field Scholar Athlete of the Year (Kim Williams of Florida State).
