Cheer Squad Competing at Partner Stunt National Championships

HONOLULU –  The University of Hawai`i cheer squad will be represented well at the NCA/NDA Collegiate Cheer and Dance Championship in Daytona Beach, Fla. this Saturday. Kristin Kowalkowski, Kelvin Lam and Amanda Lucero, George McGuire will compete in the partner stunt championship.

The two sets of partners qualified with strong video submitions that placed both in the top 10 in the country. The combo of Kowalkowski and Lam place fourth, while Lucero and McGuire were seeded sixth. A total of 28 couples qualified will battle to see who is the top stunt couple in the nation.

“Our two couples have both trained hard and have a lot of experience. They are very strong in technique and perform some of the most creative and difficult stunts in the nation.” says head coach Mike Baker. “The video qualification tapes were due soon after we won MTV's RAH! Cheerleading Bowl, so our teams had about a week to prepare to shoot their videos, but these four seniors are focused and were able to put solid routines together. In the competition, both couples will be performing difficult stunts, but are leaving out some of ones with the highest level of difficulty to have the best chance at executing a clean program.”

In 1995, UH's Paul Groom and Jodi Olerking won the partner stunt national championship. Since then only a select few have competed in the prestigious event.
