UH & Men’s Basketball Coach Bob Nash Agree On Contract Extension

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i and Bob Nash, head men's basketball coach, have agreed to terms on a one-year contract extension with a one-year option, Jim Donovan, athletics director, has announced.

Nash, who has one year remaining on his initial three-year contract, will receive an extension through the 2010-11 season. He also has an extension option for the 2011-12 season if certain performance standards are achieved – participating in a post-season appearance or winning 18 games during either the 2009-10 or 2010-11 seasons. The actual contract may not be completed for several months but will be drafted based upon the terms that UH and Coach Nash have agreed to.

“I think Bob has the nucleus of a team that can be very competitive next year with a couple of key additions,” Donovan said. “I'm hopeful this vote of confidence in Bob's leadership and abilities will translate into the winning season we all want to happen. We structured the contract to provide Bob incentives for an 18-win season, a post-season appearance – or in a best case scenario, both.”

“Today's actions keep the program moving in a very positive direction as far as recruiting,” Nash said. “I think recruits will understand the commitment the department is making to ensure our program is stable and given the resources to succeed. I'm very thankful for that.”

In two seasons, Nash has compiled a 24-36 record. The 2008-09 squad improved by two wins – despite having a roster devoid of seniors – and began the season with an 8-4 record in non-conference play. The squad also won two nationally televised games.

Nash has mentored three all-conference players, an all-district selection and landed one of the program's most highly-touted recruits in his first full year of recruiting. Five of the seven players who completed their eligibility in 2007-08 have already earned their degrees with two on schedule to graduate this year. Three of his former players are currently playing professional basketball overseas.
