Rainbow Baseball Hires Brian Green as Hitting Coach

NULL

HONOLULU – University of Hawai‘i baseball coach Mike Trapasso today announced the hiring of Brian Green as the new Rainbow assistant coach in charge of hitting.

Green comes from the University of San Diego, where he was the assistant coach in charge of hitting, outfielders and recruiting, while also serving as the camp coordinator and academics counselor. The Toreros ended their 2002 campaign as the West Coast Conference champions and made their first ever NCAA tournament appearance.

Under Green’s tutelage in 2002, San Diego led their conference in on base percentage, hits, runs, RBI, doubles, triples, walks and stolen bases, while ranking second in the league with a .311 batting average.

Prior to his time at San Diego, Green gained experience, making stops all over the country. He served as a student assistant at New Mexico State for a year. Green then spent a year as an assistant at Riverside Community College, two years at Cal Poly Pomona, two years at Chapman University, then a year as a volunteer assistant at Oregon State before joining the staff at the University of San Diego. He is currently serving as the head coach of the Kenai Peninsula Oilers, an Alaskan Summer League team, but will leave in a week to join the Rainbow staff in Hawai‘i.

“We’re pleased that Brian will be joining our staff,” Trapasso said. “He has been a coach at a number of places and has a wealth of experience in the field of hitting. As San Diego’s hitting coach last year, the team led the league in most offensive categories and went to the NCAA tournament for the first time in school history. He has coached at the junior college level, the Division II level and at the Division I level. He brings a lot of experience for such a young guy, and he was successful at every venture.”

The former second baseman and shortstop played two years at Riverside Community College before playing a year each at Chapman University and New Mexico State University.

Green holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Management from New Mexico State and a Master of Science in Educational Administration from National University. He and his wife, Becki, currently reside in La Mesa, Calif.
