University of Hawai'i at Manoa Letterwinners Club board member Ken Nagatani, was awarded the 2017 Kane Fernandez Community Service Award at halftime of the UH Men's Basketball game against Long Beach State on Thursday, February 22, 2018.
Ken ran track for the University of Hawaii in the early 1950's, alongside the namesake of the award, Kane Fernandez. Ken and Kane formed one of the strongest long distance tandems for the Bows, and Ken was singled out as one of the best distance runners in Hawaii by Coach Moses Omes.
Ken has since been an active part of his community, spending close to 50 years in multiple capacities with Kaneohe Youth Baseball and Little League. Ken was a founding member of the Letterwinners Club that was formed in 1997, and he was one of the very first to sign on as a lifetime member.
Presenting the award to Ken on the court were Kane Fernandez's son Scott Fernandez, UH Athletic Director David Matlin, Letterwinners Club President
Justin Clapp, and Associate Athletic Director
Carl Clapp.
The award is named for the late Kane Fernandez, chairman and chief executive officer of Fernandez Entertainment, who passed away in January 2001. He was one of the original members of the UH Letterwinners Club.
