UH Swim & Dive Captures 7 Major MPSF Awards

HONOLULU -- The University of Hawai'i swimming and diving teams captured seven out of a possible 10 major MPSF postseason honors, as the league recognized it's top individuals on Thursday.

Head coach Dan Schemmel earned Women's Swimming Coach of the Year while diving coaches Mike Brown and Anita Rossing earned Diving Co-Coach of the Year honors on both the men's and women's sides. Sophomore Metin Aydin was selected as the MPSF Men's Swimmer of the year and sophomore Johan Sandell was picked as the men's Diver of the Year. Meanwhile, junior Franziska Weidner was recognized as the MPSF Women's Swimmer of the Year and Madison Sthamann earned Women's Diver of the Year honors.

Schemmel guided the Rainbow Wahine to an MPSF Championship in his first season at the helm of the program. Hawai'i won a championship-high 11 titles (four in record fashion), accounting for over half of the 21 possible gold medals. At the NCAA Championships, two-time MPSF Swimmer of the Year Franziska Weidner took 33rd and Bryndis Hansen 48th in the 100 free. Weidner recorded two other top-40 swims at NCAA's, placing 29th in the 200 IM and 40th in the 200 free. Hansen finished 38th in the 200 free.

Hawai'i Diving Coaches Mike Brown and Anita Rossing, in their 16th year coaching the UH women, led the Rainbow Wahine to another successful show at the MPSF Championships. In all, the UH women collected four first-team and eight second-team all-conference diving selections. Brown and Rossing have won all five MPSF Women's Diving Coach of the Year honors. During that stretch, Rainbow Wahine Divers have collected a remarkable 31 out of a possible 45 first-team All-MPSF selections, and all five Diver of the Year awards.

Brown and Rossing led the Hawai'i men to another successful showing at the MPSF Championships in Brown's 17th year coaching the Hawai'i men's divers, and Rossing's 16th. Sophomore MPSF Diver of the Year Johan Sandell was the conference platform champion, and was the lone MPSF Diver to qualify on all three boards at the NCAA Championships. In all, the Hawai'i men collected five all-conference diving selections, including three for Sandell and two for Grant Newcombe. This is the second MPSF Men's Diving Coach of the Year honor for Brown and Rossing.

Aydin (Cologne, Germany/Grand Valley State) turned in a remarkable year, particularly in the postseason. He won the 200 IM, 200 back, 200 medley relay, and 400 medley relay at the MPSF Championships. He was also second in the 100 back, and third in the 800 free relay and 400 free relay. Aydin recorded three top-20 swims at the NCAA Championships, placing 15th in the 200 IM, 19th in the 100 back, and 18th in the 200 back. He broke the UH school records in the 100 back, 200 back, 200 IM, 400 IM, 200 medley relay, and 400 medley relay throughout the year. He was a three-time MPSF Athlete of the Week this year, one of which was earned after being the high-point swimmer at the A3 Invitational (Nov. 23). Aydin is the second MPSF Men's Swimmer of the Year from Hawai'i (Victor Goicoechea, 2014).

Sandell (Huddinge, Sweden) won the platform event at the MPSF Championships (404.40), placed third on the three-meter (386.90) and fourth on the one-meter (321.60), giving him all-conference honors on all three boards (first-team selection on platform and three-meter). He finished third on three-meter, sixth on platform and 12th on one-meter at the NCAA Zone E Championships, en route to being the only MPSF diver to qualify in all three events for the 2017 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. He proceeded to finish 33rd on Platform, 37th on one-meter, and 41st on three-meter at the NCAA Championships. Sandell is the fourth consecutive MPSF Diver of the Year from Hawai'i, following Amund Gismervik's previous three.

Weidner (Nurenberg, Germany) becomes the first back-to-back MPSF Women's Swimmer of the Year. She is the MPSF Champion in the 200 IM with a conference and facility record time (1:56.32), as well as in the 200 free (1:46.67), and 100 free (48.88—one-hundredth of a second off the conference record), helping UH to the team title. Her 200 IM took down the East Los Angeles College facility record set in 1979. Weidner was also a member of the winning 200, 400 (MPSF record 3:19.03), and 800 free relays, and the second-place 400 Medley Relay. An NCAA Championship qualifier in three events, Weidner recorded a 29th-place 200 IM, 33rd-place 100 free, and 40th-place 200 free. A four-time conference athlete of the week selection this year, Weidner is the third-straight and third all-time MPSF Women's Swimmer of the Year from Hawai'i (Weidner-2016, Jasmine Alkhaldi-2015).

Sthamann (Balgonie, Saskatchewan, Canada/LSU) makes it a perfect five-for-five for Rainbow Wahine earning MPSF Women's Diver of the Year honors, following Aimee Harrison's four-year run. Sthamann is this year's MPSF three-meter and platform champion, earning first-team all-conference on each board. She was also a second-team honoree on the one-meter. On the final day of the MPSF Championships, Sthamann recorded an MPSF record platform score of 313.90, helping UH to the team title. She went on to place second in the platform and 12th on the three-meter at the NCAA Zone E Championships. Sthamann was the only MPSF female diver to qualify for the NCAA Championships, where she placed 21st on platform and 49th on three-meter.
