"This is going to be a great recruiting class for the University of Hawai'i," head coach
Michele Nagamine said. "I'm excited about this group because of the tremendous love that they have for Hawai'i. Every one of these players is hungry and eager to make positive impacts for our team and the level of intelligence and athleticism within the group is very exciting."
Randi Fontes, who led Pearl City High School to a 2016 State championship and 2014 OIA championship, earned 2016 HHSAA all-tournament and 2016 Honolulu Star-Advertiser Stellar Eleven recognition with her versatility as a defender, midfielder and forward. Fontes has played five seasons for the Honolulu Bulls club team, helping the Bulls to four consecutive Hawai'i state championships from 2013-16.
Nagamine on Fontes: They say "Good things come in small packages" and that's very true of Randi Fontes. Although she is smaller in stature, she is quick, crafty and creative and has one of the best soccer minds that I've seen in a long time. She has been a standout player in the Hawaii club scene for many years and I love her versatility. Randi is a goal scorer and can play multiple positions well, so I believe she will make an immediate impact for our team.
Leialoha Medeiros, a midfielder who will graduate from Kamehameha Schools Maui this spring, scored more than 50 goals with over 40 assists in her high school career. She is a three-time MIL girls soccer All Star first-team selection and led her team to a 2013-14 MIL championship. She also played for Maui United Soccer Club for nine years, averaging 20 goals and 20 assists per season.
Nagamine on Medeiros: Lei is solid all around – she is very good technically and has a great understanding of the game. Lei comes from a great family and knew early on that she wanted to stay home. She has a deep love and appreciation for UH that really came through during the recruiting process. I love her presence on the field; she works extremely hard and carries herself with a lot of confidence.
Taylor Rusnak, a defender who played three seasons at Memorial High School in Houston, Texas and will graduate from Maui's Haleakala Waldorf High School, helped MHS to district championships in 2015 and 2016 and was recognized as a two-time Most Valuable Defender (2015, '16), 2015 District 18-6 Newcomer of the Year, and was a two-time academic all-district selection. She played club soccer for one year for Maui United after seven seasons with the Albion Hurricanes. Rusnak earned distinguished honor roll recognition in 2015 and 2016, and Awards of Excellence in geometry, world history, chemistry and physics.
Nagamine on Rusnak: Taylor is one of the hardest working kids that I have recruited. She is a steadfast defender who is not afraid to put a tackle on anyone. She will literally do all it takes to make an impact for her team. It was a great experience for me as a coach to watch her growth and development over the last two years. She was able to take feedback from her club coaches and our staff, apply it to her game and then went through the roof. I think Taylor's best soccer is ahead of her and I'm excited to welcome her to our team.
Cristina Drossos, a defender/forward from Oak Ridge High School in El Dorado Hills, Calif., was captain of the soccer team at ORHS her senior year in 2016-17. She was selected to the US Club Soccer National Identification Camp in 2013 and played nine years for San Juan Soccer Club of the ECNL and earned the San Juan Soccer Premiere Student-Athlete Award six years in a row. Drossos helped her club team to the ECNL national playoffs four straight seasons (2012-16), and was MVP of the ORHS lacrosse team and also competed in basketball.
Nagamine on Drossos: Cristina hails from one of the top clubs in Northern California and is a tall, fast defender who is going to give us a good presence in the air. She's a solid 1v1 defender who has the ability to get up and down the field with ease. Her desire to compete and her athleticism make her a very dangerous player with huge potential.
Sadie Lutz, a defender, will join Hawai'i from Moorpark High School in Moorpark, Calif., where she helped MHS to Coastal Canyon League championships in 2015 and 2016 and the CIF state finals in 2016. She was team captain in 2017, all-Coastal Canyon League second-team in 2016, and was recognized as the team's Most Inspirational in 2014. She also played club soccer for Eagles ECNL for seven seasons. Lutz is a three-time academic all-Coastal Canyon League selection.
Nagamine on Lutz: Sadie has a personality and smile that lights up a room. She is a classic blue-collar player – her work rate is through the roof and she knows how to grind things out. When I watched her play, her love for the game really came through and I could tell she was a great teammate. She has the ability to play multiple positions both on offense and defense. Her determination and mental toughness will help her compete for time immediately.
Izzy Deutsch is a midfielder from Desert Vista High School in Phoenix, Ariz. She earned first-team Division I all-state and all-Arizona team honors after scoring the game-winning goal to win the 2016 Arizona Division I state championship. She also earned Tempe all-City and all-section honors, Best XI recognition at the A2 Soccer Showcase, 2015-16 varsity MVP and 2013-14 varsity Rookie of the Year honors. She scored seven goals and added 13 assists in 2016. She competed for Ahwatukee Foothills Soccer Club for nine years, helping the team to four consecutive Arizona State Cup championships from 2013-16. Deutsch earned Academic Excellence & Scholastic Achievement honors as well as the Scholar-Athlete Award from 2014-16.
Nagamine on Deutsch: "Izzy" is a very fit, industrious player. She is an incredible student-athlete who thrives on feedback and has worked very hard in the last year to hone her role as a play-maker. She leads by example and has a wonderful personality. She is committed and passionate and will be a great addition to our midfield.
Taylor Mason, a defender from Greater Atlanta Christian School in Norcross, Ga., helped her team to state championships in 2014 and 2015, and region championships in 2014, 2015 and 2016. She was varsity captain in 2017 and a member of the Georgia ODP team from 2013-16. Mason also played club soccer for Concord Fire ECNL for 10 years. She will become the first player from Georgia to join the Rainbow Wahine soccer program. Mason was a Beta Club member for four years.
Nagamine on Mason: I wanted Taylor to come to UH the very first time I saw her play. She is a fearless outside back who can fly up and down the sideline and has the ability to cross with both feet. She is tenacious and versatile, so she will compete for time in the midfield as well.
NOTE: A previous version of this story was updated on Feb. 8, 2017 to include a seventh member of the recruiting class, Taylor Rusnak.
