Photo GalleryHONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team held its annual Green vs. White scrimmage at the Stan Sheriff Center on Saturday afternoon. After dropping the first set, the White team held on to win the scrimmage, 2-1.
Overall,
Megan Huff and
Nikki Taylor recorded match-highs of 12 kills apiece, while
Olivia Magill and
Kalei Greeley both added 10 kills each for the White team.
Tai Manu-Olevao led both teams with 16 digs while
Savanah Kahakai, the White team's libero, added 14. Junior transfer
Annie Mitchem was in on four blocks plus one solo, while
Emily Maglio had five block assists. The White team's setter,
Tayler Higgins recorded 39 assists and the Green Team's setter Kendra
Koelsch dished out 30.
The first set went back-and-forth between the two teams in a tightly contested set with 12 ties and seven lead changes. The Green team was led by sophomore Huff who had six kills. Mitchem got her first action on the Teraflex, racking up four kills and three blocks in the first set. The White team was led by Magill and Taylor who both had four kills apiece.
The White team evened the match with a dominant performance in set two, beginning the set by winning the first four points. The White reeled off runs of four points five times en route to a 25-8 win to knot the match at 1-to-1. Higgins controlled a balanced attack with Manu-Olevao, Maglio, and Taylor all tallying three kills apiece with
Kalei Greeley and Magill adding two kills each.
In the third and final set, the Green team battled back to push the White squad. The Green team led through the first half of the set, but down the stretch, the White team came from behind and then held a two point cushion after they hit 16-point mark. The White held off the Green team for a 26-24 win to capture the set. Late in the set, the Green team's
McKenna Granato's kill from the back row tied the game at 24-24, but a service error and a block by Mitchem and Taylor sealed the win.
The Rainbow Wahine open their 2015 season with the Chevron Rainbow Wahine Invitational, Aug. 28-30. The 'Bows open against former Western Athletic conference rival Idaho on Friday night at 7:00 pm. Also competing in the tournament are Wichita State and Oregon State who both received votes in the preseason AVCA Coaches' Poll.
