Edwards Selected For U.S. National Football Team

INDIANAPOLIS – Former University of Hawai'i football standout Mike Edwards was selected to play on the United States Men's National team, which will compete in the International Federation of American Football (IFAF) World Championship next month in Canton, Ohio.
 
Edwards was one of 45 players selected to the team that was assembled by USA Football. The U.S. is the two-time defending tournament champions will compete for the world title against six other countries, July 9-18, at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium. The Americans captured the 2011 gold medal with a 50-7 victory over Canada in Vienna, Austria and won 23-20 in double overtime over Japan to win the 2007 tournament held in Kawasaki, Japan, the first that included a team from the United States.
 
Edwards was a two-year letterman for the Rainbow Warriors (2011-12). The Cleveland, Ohio native was named to several All-American teams as a kickoff returner in 2012 after leading the nation in kickoff return yardage. The Mountain West Special Teams Player of the Year returned three kickoffs for touchdowns and also led the conference in passes defended as a cornerback.
 
The U.S. National team will be coached by former Boise State and Colorado head coach Dan Hawkins.
 
The IFAF World Championships has been held every four years since 1999. This year's tournament games will run July 9, 12, and 15 with consolation games and the medal round on Saturday, July 18. Kickoffs are noon, 3:30 p.m., and 7:00 p.m., on July 9, 12, 15, and 18 to determine gold, silver, and bronze medal winners.
 
USA Football is the sport's national governing body in the United States.
