HONOLULU—University of Hawai'i women's basketball head coach
Laura Beeman announced UH's newest signees for the 2015-16 season. Andrea Easley, Lahni and Leah Salanoa will join Olivia Crawford as the Rainbow Wahine's freshman class for the upcoming season.
Easley is a 5-11 combo guard who can fill the role at the point or as a shooting guard out of Horizon High School in Scottsdale, Ariz. This past year, she posted solid numbers across the board, averaging 21 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and three steals per game. Easley is a four-year starter on the varsity team and was selected all-section as well as all-state honorable mention. She was named the team's Best Offensive Player for 2015. Academically, Easley was on the school's honor roll all four years and in the top 10% in college admissions. She is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and also participated on the track and field team.
"At 5'11 Andie is a perfect fit with our tall, lanky and diverse perimeter players." says Beeman. Her ability to run the 1, 2 or 3 will make her unique and vital to our success on the perimeter. Her ability to create her shot off the dribble or knock down the open three will make her a valuable addition to our offensive schemes."
The Salanoa sisters are 5-11 identical twins from Rio Mesa High School in Oxnard, Calif. Both can play inside and out and will prove to be match-up nightmares for opposing teams. This past season, Leah Salanoa averaged 13.6 points, 8.4 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game and earned first team all-league and second team all-county honors while also being named an academic scholar athlete. Lahni Salanoa recorded 10.6 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game for the Spartans while earning a spot on the all-league second team. She also earned scholar-athlete honors.
"The ability to play multiple positions at the Division I level is truly unique," states Beeman. "Leah will give our lineup great diversity in her ability to rebound and run, shoot the 3 or post up smaller guards when needed. Her size will make her very difficult to guard inside or on the perimeter. We are excited to add such a versatile player to our roster."
"Lahni brings a post players size with a shooters touch to our roster," Says Beeman. "She too will have the ability to rebound and run or spot up for the open 3. Her physical style of play will make her difficult to keep off the boards. Her high level of energy will be a great asset to our team next year."
Easley and the Salanoas will join Crawford who signed her National Letter of Intent this past fall. Crawford is a talented point guard from Lakes High School in Lakewood, Wash. Last season, she averaged 22.1 points, 2.1 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.7 steals per game for the Lancers. Crawford who lived in Hawai'i for a time, will return to the islands after earning first team all-area and all-state second team honors. Crawford was named the Tacoma Athlete of the Year and off the court also received the R.O.T.C. Academic Excellence award and a scholar-athlete award as well.
"Olivia fits the prototype for successful guards in our conference. She has tremendous speed to lead our break and combines her scoring ability with pesky on ball defense," says Beeman. "She adds a dimension to our team that we haven't had yet."
The defending Big West Conference champions return 10 players from last year's squad that notched a 23-9 overall record and a 14-2 conference mark with a 15-game win streak en route to their third straight WNIT appearance.
