Beach Volleyball Unveils 2016 Schedule

2016 Schedule

HONOLULU – To be the best you have to play the best, and the University of Hawai'i beach volleyball team is doing just that. Rainbow Wahine head coach Jeff Hall announced the 2016 University of Hawai'i beach volleyball schedule which includes six of UH's seven opponents from last year's AVCA National Championship.

"By putting together such a challenging schedule we put ourselves in the best position possible to be competitive in the national tournament," said Hall, who is in his second season as head coach. "We will be playing in two top-notch tournaments on the road. The first hosted by Pepperdine which will have the top west region programs, and the other in Florida hosted by Stetson that has the best the east has to offer."

The schedule also features the first-ever Big West Conference tournament a possible qualification to the inaugural NCAA National Championship in Gulf Shores, Ala. In total, the Rainbow Wahine have eight home competition dates, three at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletic Complex on the UH-Manoa campus and five at historic Queen's Beach in Waikiki.

The 'Bows travel to California for their season opener, playing in the Pepperdine Kickoff Tournament (Mar. 5-6) which features three of last season's national semifinal teams in USC, Long Beach State and Pepperdine. The Women of Troy come in as the defending national champion and, in Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes, also boast the reigning pairs national champion.

The 'Bows then return for a two-week home stand, highlighted by a much-anticipated meeting with USC (Mar. 15) in their first match of the season at Ching Courts.

UH returns to the mainland for the Stetson Spring Break Tournament in Deland, Fla. Over the course of four days the 'Bows will play Stetson, Florida State and Florida Atlantic, all participants in the 2015 AVCA National Championship. Tulane, also competing in the tournament, return its top pair of Jackie Wegner and Tea Juric who earned an at-large berth to last season's AVCA national pairs championship.

The 'Bows will host UCLA, Arizona State and Boise State in April before closing the regular season playing in the 2nd annual Aloha Invitational held at Queen's Beach.
