HONOLULU – University of Hawai'i track and field and cross country head coach
Carmyn James announced two new assistant coaches to the staff for the 2014-15 season.
Tim Boyce will serve as cross country and distance coach while
Josh Aydlette will coach the throwers.
Boyce comes to UH from Pacific University (Ore.) where he was the head coach of both the men's and women's track and field and cross country teams for the past seven years. During his tenure, he coached three cross country runners to the NCAA Division III Championship and seven Northwest Conference track and field champions.
"It is with great pleasure that I welcome Coach Boyce to our Cross Country and Track & Field Program," James said. "Tim has coached nearly all of the track & field events during his extensive career but his specialty is the distance events.
"In addition to being a highly experienced distance coach, Coach Boyce is also very familiar with the Hawaiian ways. At Pacific University in Oregon, his Track & Field Team hosted an annual luau following their final home meet of the season!"
In 2013, the men's track and field team placed third at the NWC Championships and scored the second-most points in a conference meet in school history. This season, the Boxers finished second at the conference meet for the sixth time.
Boyce also oversaw the addition of men's and women's indoor track and field program in 2013. Pacific hosted a number of high-profile meets including the 2009 NWC Track and Field Championships, the 2012 NWC Cross Country Championships, the 2013 Big Sky Conference Track and Field Championships and the annual Pacific Twilight track meet.
Prior to Pacific, Boyce spent seven years as head coach of the track and field and cross country program at SUNY Oswego in Oswego, N.Y., and was also an assistant coach at Willamette University in Salem, Ore., and Lane Community College in Eugene, Ore.
Aydlette spent the past decade as throws coach at his alma mater, Charleston Southern, where he was inducted into the school's Hall of Fame in 2011.
Aydlette's throwers broke nearly 20 school records and earned 35 Big South all-conference honors. One of recent throwers, Clarence Gallop, placed second at the USA Track and Field Junior Outdoor Championships and finished 24
th at the IAAF Junior World Championships this summer.
Two more of his men's throwers, Rob Grabill and Richie German, competed at the USATF Junior National Championships in 2010 and '11, respectively, while women's thrower Joshlyn Noga qualified for the 2012 USATF Junior National Championships.
"I am highly looking forward to working with Joshua Aydlette – as no doubt all of the throwers on our team are too," James said. "Coach Aydlette has a wealth of experience coaching the throws and he has a passion for living in Hawai'i which makes him a perfect fit for our program.
"At the National Junior Track & Field Championships in Eugene last month, one of Coach Aydlette's walk-on throwers at Charleston Southern University threw a personal best in the hammer event and qualified to represent Team USA at the World Junior Championships. This is proof that Josh can not only find diamonds in the rough but he can also coach them to the best of their ability on the national stage!"
Aydlette was recently named to the Big South's All-Decade team. As a standout thrower, he went undefeated in the weight throw against Big South opponents during his career. He won five Big South championships in all and was named to the all-conference team 13 times. Aydlette was the first athlete in Big South Track & Field history to win the same event at the conference championship in all four years of his eligibility.
He is married to former Jessica Dowdy and they have a three and a half year old daughter, Lily.
