HONOLULU – University of Hawai'i head football coach
Norm Chow announced the hiring of former Wai'anae High School and NFL veteran
Kurt Gouveia as a defensive assistant coach in charge of outside linebackers. In addition,
Jordan Wynn was promoted from graduate assistant to quarterbacks coach.
"I'm awfully excited that Kurt and Jordan are now apart of our full-time staff," Chow said. "Jordan was put into a very unusual circumstance last year as a graduate assistant and he responded like an experienced coach. He did a terrific job calling most of the plays during the latter half of the season. He has a great relationship with our quarterbacks and has a bright future. He understands the game beyond his years. Kurt has a tremendous history with the state as both a player and coach and the experience he has gained at the highest level will no doubt help our defensive staff."
Gouveia spent 13 seasons in the NFL and holds the distinction of winning a high school championship (O'ahu Prep Bowl) with Wai'anae from 1977-78, '80, collegiate national championship with Brigham Young in 1984 and Super Bowl with the Washington Redskins in 1987 and '91.
Last month, Gouveia was one of seven charter members inducted into the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame and he is also a member of the Hawai'i Sports Hall of Fame having been inducted in 2002.
"I'm excited to get out there and help the program anyway I can," Gouveia said. "I'm a product of the islands and I'm eager to come back and inspire young Polynesian men, like myself, to believe in their goals and aspirations. If I can do it, they can too. To start out at Wai'anae High School, onto college and then reach the highest level – the NFL is the ultimate dream of every player – I hope to inspire them to become better football players."
From 2003-04, Gouveia was a student manager at UH under then-head coach June Jones. He then coached oversees for three years in NFL Europe with the Berlin Thunder (2005 and '07) and Rhein Fire (2006), the latter of which serving as co-defensive coordinator. He helped lead both Berlin and Rhein to the World Bowl.
Gouveia returned to coaching with Lake Norman High School in 2010 before becoming linebackers and special teams assistant with the United Football League's Sacramento Mountain Lions in 2011. He joined the UFL's Virginia Destroyers in 2012 and last year was a coach for the American squad in the National Football League Players Association Collegiate Bowl.
The Wai'anae, O'ahu native spent nine of his 13 years playing for the Washington Redskins, where he was drafted in the eighth round of the 1986 NFL Draft. The BYU alum also played for the Philadelphia Eagles and San Diego Chargers. He spent one year with the Las Vegas Outlaws of the XFL before retiring.
Wynn will continue to work with the quarterbacks and assist Chow with play-calling duties. He joined the UH staff last season following a playing career at the University of Utah that was cut short due to a chronic shoulder injury. The Oceanside, Calif., native played two full seasons and parts of two others for the Utes.
Under Wynn's guidance, quarterback
Sean Schroeder threw for 2,960 yards and 28 touchdowns in eight starts. He eclipsed 300-yards passing six times, including a career-high 499 yards and six touchdowns against Wyoming.
Wynn finished his career with a 14-7 record as a starter and played in 22 career games, throwing for 4,637 yards, eighth-best in school history. He also completed 60 percent of his pass attempts and threw 33 career touchdowns, which is sixth-best in school history.
In 2009, he became only the third true freshman to start at quarterback for Utah and capped his season as the Poinsettia Bowl Most Valuable Player, leading the Utes to a 37-27 victory over California and a 10-3 campaign. The following year, he started in 10 games and finished second in the Mountain West and 30th nationally, averaging 233.4 yards per game. After starting the first four games of 2011, his season was cut short due to an injury to his left (non-throwing) shoulder. He started the first two games of 2012 before reinjuring his shoulder and announcing his retirement from the sport.
