VIDEO: No. 23/25 UH Sweeps on Opening Night; Coolen Wins 800th

HONOLULU—The 23/25th-ranked University of Hawai`i softball team (2-0) opened the 2013 season with a pair of victories on the first day of the Oceanic Time Warner Cable Paradise Classic. The Rainbow Wahine defeated Ole Miss 2-0 and UAB 7-2. With the two wins, UH head coach Bob Coolen hit the 800th-win mark as the head coach of Hawai`i.
 
Coolen, who just entered his 22nd year as the head coach at UH, raised his record at Hawai`i to 800-454-1. His overall career record now stands at 872-548-1. At the start of last season, he was ranked No. 15 amongst active Division I coaches.
 
Hawai`i 2, Ole Miss 0

In a pitcher's dual of a game, senior pitcher Kaia Parnaby earned the complete game victory with a one-hit shut-out over Ole Miss. Parnaby fanned 11 Rebels in seven innings of work, allowing just one infield hit with no walks. Brittany Broome was the only Rebel to get a hit off of Parnaby and she was gunned out trying to steal second by Kayla Wartner and Jessica Iwata. Parnaby faced the minimum 21 batters in the game.
 
Both teams were held hitless into the sixth inning. But, in that sixth inning, the 'Bows loaded the bases on two walks and a beaned batter. Sharla Kliebenstein then ripped a single to the left-centerfield gap to drive in Kelly Majam and pinch runner Kiani Wong to break the scoreless game.
 
Ole Miss' Shelby Jo Fenter threw 5.2 innings, allowing the one hit with 12 strike outs and four walks.
 
Hawai`i 7, UAB 2

UAB got on the scoreboard first, posting one run in the top of the second. Kate Armstrong led the inning off with a single up the middle and later with the bases loaded after a single and a walk, scored on a groundout to second to go up 1-0 over UH.
 
Hawai`i knotted the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the frame. Kliebenstein started things off by beating out an infield single. A groundout to short moved her to second and then Keiki Carlos got a hit to left. On the play, the initial throw went to third, but the third baseman tried to gun down Carlos at second, but the throw sailed past the second baseman allowing Kliebenstein to score.
 
UAB answered right back, tacking another run on the board in the third on an RBI single by Armstrong, giving the Blazers a 2-1 lead.
 
UH however responded in the bottom of the third. Brynne  Buchanan reached on a muffed throw by the first baseman and scored on a double by Kelly Majam ripped to the left-centerfield gap. Majam then crossed the plate after the UAB catcher tried to pick her off at third, but the throw skipped past the shortstop and third baseman into leftfield to give UH a 3-2 lead.
 
The 'Bows extended their lead to 6-2 in the fourth. Kliebenstein led of with a double to right-centerfield and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt executed by Kaile Nakao. A fielding error on the third baseman allowed Carlos to reach first safely putting runners at the corners. Carlos then stole second putting both runners into scoring position. Alyssa Villalpando then hit into a fielder's choice  to short that erased Carlos but scored Kliebenstein from third. Pinch runner Dori Ann Sugai then moved to second when Buchanan drew a walk. Majam then came through with a single to center to score Sugai from second and on the play, the centerfielder booted the ball which allowed Buchanan to score as well to take a 6-2 lead into the fifth.
 
UH's pitcher, Carlos, issued walks to the first two batters in the top of the fifth. Parnaby then entered the game and promptly struck out the side.  
 
UH capped their scoring with an RBI single by Nakao that scored pinch runner Ciana Russ (for Kayla Wartner) from second.
 
Carlos earned her first collegiate win. She tossed 4-plus innings, allowing two runs on four hits with five walks and three strike outs. Parnaby earned her first save of the season and fourth of her career, throwing the final three innings. Parnaby faced just nine batters and struck out eight of them, bringing her total number of K's for the night to 19.
 
UAB's Lauren Webster threw 4.0 innings, allowing six runs on five hits with a walk and five strike outs. Lannah Campbell closed the game, throwing 2.0 innings, allowing one run on three hits with two strike outs.
 
The tournament continues tomorrow with Hawai`i facing St. Mary's at 6:00 pm and No. 16/8 Washington at 8:00 pm.
