HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i baseball team had another solid offensive effort, but lost its third straight to No. 6 Oregon, 9-5, on Sunday afternoon at Les Murakami Stadium. The Ducks had their way with Rainbow pitching to the tune of 16 hits on their nine runs.
Connor Little (0-1), seeing his first action since 2011, pitched into the seventh inning before being lifted for
Lawrence Chew. Little allowed four earned runs on eight hits in six and one-third innings. Cole Irvin (1-0) earned the win for Oregon, surrendering three runs on five hits in seven complete innings.
For the 'Bows, Pi'ikea Kitamura batted 2-3 with two runs and two RBI, and
Jerry Kleman added a pair of hits and one RBI.
Ryon Healy hit 4-5 with one run and three RBI for the Ducks including a ninth-inning homerun that put the game out of reach. Aaron Payne added four hits and three runs.
UH opened the scoring for the first time in the series. Kitamura drove home
Kalei Hanawahine (1 R) from second base, collecting his first hit and RBI of the series.
Little cruised through the first two and two-thirds innings before allowing a walk to J.J. Altobelli (2 H, 1 R, 1 RBI). Payne's base hit moved Altobelli to third, but Little got out of the jam when he forced a ground out to
Andre Real (2 H, 1 R) who touched second base for the force out.
In the fourth inning, Oregon loaded the bases on a fielding error by Kitamura but managed just one run. The Ducks added a pair of runs one inning later, though, to take a 3-1 lead. Scott Heineman's (2 H, 1 R, 2 RBI) sacrifice fly and an infield RBI single by Healy gave Oregon the two-run lead.
The 'Bows had their best opportunity in the seventh inning when Kleman singled to load the bases with no outs.
Conner George (1 H, 1 RBI) fell behind 0-2 but battled back to bring home a run on a pop to centerfield. L.J. Brewster (1 H, 1 R) pinch hit for
Kaeo Aliviado and promptly singled to drive in another run to cut the deficit to two runs through seven innings. Oregon responded with a pair of runs one inning later and tacked on another to take an 8-3 lead in the eighth inning.
Hawai'i and Oregon play their season finale on Monday. First pitch is set for 1:05 p.m.
