HONOLULU –
Adam Hurley had a pair of hits including a double, but it wasn't enough as the University of Hawai'i Rainbow baseball team suffered a 3-0 season-opening loss on Friday night to No. 6 Oregon. The game was played in front of a sold-out crowd at Les Murakami Stadium.
The 'Bows (0-1) were shutout on opening day for the first time since 1971, and lose just their first season opener to the Ducks (1-0).
Scott Squier (0-1) was tagged with loss, allowing two runs on four hits in four and two-thirds innings of work. Jake Reed (1-0) tossed six scoreless innings to earn the win for the Ducks.
The two teams played error-free ball, but Oregon scattered three runs and kept the 'Bows at bay. Kyle Garlick had a run and one hit for Oregon, and J.J. Altobelli posted one run and an RBI.
Oregon opened the scoring with a run in the second inning, but some nifty Rainbow defense prevented the game from getting out of hand. With the bases loaded and a run on the board for the Ducks, Josh Graham (0-2) hit slow dribbler to first base that
Marc Flores (1-3) picked up and threw to catcher
Trevor Podratz (0-3) to get the force out at home. Squier then forced a pop-up to Aaron Payne (1 H, 1 RBI) to end the inning.
Squier tossed 93 pitches before being lifted in the fifth inning for
Jon Flinn who allowed one run in 1.2 innings.
Lawrence Chew pitched a scoreless two and two-thirds innings for UH to finish the game.
The Rainbows and Ducks face off in game two of the series on Saturday night. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
