LAS VEGAS, Nev.—The No. 20/23 University of Hawai`i softball team (5-2, 0-0 Big West) fell in their Easton Desert Classic opener to BYU, 4-2.
Kaia Parnaby went the distance, falling to 3-2 on the season while
Jessica Iwata and
Keiki Carlos collected two hits apiece to pace the 'Bows at Eller Media Stadium in Las Vegas
The Cougars jumped on the scoreboard first, posting one run to start the game. Lacey Millett reached on a throwing error off a bunt back to the pitcher with one out. She later came around to score on an RBI-groundout to short by Katie Manuma.
Hawai`i responded in the bottom of the third, tallying two runs to take the lead, 2-1.
Alyssa Villalpando led the inning off with a walk. Pinch runner
Dori Ann Sugai then entered the game and moved to third on a pair of wild pitches.
Kelly Majam reached first on a strike out swinging wild pitch to put runners at the corners. Both runners were in scoring position after
Kayla Wartner grounded out to first and a walk to Leisha Li`ili`i loaded the bases. Iwata then came to the plate and drove in Sugai and Majam with an RBI single to the left-centerfield gap.
The 'Bows had another scoring opportunity in the fourth, but with runners at first and third, a double-steal attempt was thwarted for the third out of the inning.
In the top of the fourth, BYU scored two to re-take the lead, 3-2. Manuma reached on a fielding error on the second baseman and moved to second on a bunt single by Megan Arnold. Both runners then scored on an RBI-single by Carly Duckworth and a sacrifice fly by Madisen Robb.
The Cougars added another run in the fifth on an RBI single by Manuma who drove in Millett from second.
Parnaby threw 7.0 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits with seven strike outs and no walks.
BYU's Tori Almond also threw a complete game, giving up two runs on five hits with five walks and seven strike outs.
Hawai`i continues play in the Easton Desert Classic on Friday against San Jose State at the Stephanie Lynn Craig Softball Complex at 1:30 pm and No. 18/19 UCLA at Eller Media Stadium at 6:00 pm.
