No. 23 Hawai`i Shuts Out Ole Miss; Falls to No. 16 Washington

HONOLULU—The No. 23/25 University of Hawai`i softball team (5-1) defeated Ole Miss to start the day, 2-0, but fell in the Oceanic Time Warner Championship Game to No. 16 Washington, 3-1. Kaia Parnaby earned Most Valuable Pitcher honors while Sharla Kliebenstein, Kelly Majam, and Kayla Wartner earned all-tournament honors.

Hawai`i got on the board first in the fifth inning. Sharla Kliebenstein started things with a single up the middle. She moved to second on a wild pitch and stole third. Later, with two outs, Alyssa Villalpando drew a walk to put runners at the corners. Then, on their second attempt, pinch runner Jazmine Zamora and Kliebenstein executed a double steal with Zamora getting in a run-down and Kliebensteing sprinting home for the game's first run.
 
In the top of the sixth, the Rebels rallied, staring with Bri Payne breaking a no-hitter with a double to the left-center gap. The next two batters reached on infield bunt singles to load the bases with no outs. Parnaby then got the next batter to pop out to short and then Villalpando, Wartner and Leisha Li`ili`i turned a 5-2-3 double play to end the inning.
 
Kaia pitched her third complete game shutout of the tournament, giving up just three hits with no walks and five strike outs.
 
The Rebels' Carly Hummel also threw a complete game, giving up two runs on three hits with four walks and four strike outs.

In the Championship Game of the Paradise Classic, Washington got all the runs they needed for the win in the first inning on a two-run home run by Kaitlin Inglesby. It was the first runs that Parnaby had given up all tourney long.
 
Hawai`i's cut their deficit in half, posting one run in the bottom of the first. Li`ili`i started a two-out rally with an opposite field single through the leftside of the infield. UW starter Kasey Stanchek then walked the next two batters to load the bases, then walked Keiki Carlos to force Li`ili`i for the run.
 
The Huskies added another run in the top of the third on a solo shot to center by Hooch Fagaly.
 
The 'Bows tried to respond in the bottom of the third, as they loaded the bases, but Bryana Walker then came in relief for the Huskies and got two strike outs to stymie UH. Walker went on to hold the Hawai`i offense at bay with eight strike outs. She did not allow a runner to reach first base the rest of the game.
 
Parnaby (3-1) suffered her first loss of the season, allowing three runs on four hits with two walks and three strike outs in 4.2 innings. Parnaby threw in all six of UH's game and finished the tournament with a 0.85 ERA with 39 strike outs and three walks in 31.2 innings pitched. Carlos closed the game, tossing the final 2.1 innings. She did not allow a run and gave up one hit with three walks.
 
Hawai`i now hits the road for its annual trip to Las Vegas, Nev. to play in the UNLV's Easton Desert Classic, Feb. 14-17.
