Although young and inexperienced at the FBS level, the defensive secondary still boasts several key defensive players.
Cornerback
Mike Edwards, a junior from Cleveland, Ohio, started 12 games last season while
John Hardy-Tuliau, a junior from Temecula, Calif., can play both safety and cornerback positions. Edwards, who originally signed with Tennessee out of high school, had a tremendous rookie season for the Warriors, tallied 43 tackles with 12 passes defended. Hardy-Tuliau started all 13 games at free safety and finished third on the team with 73 tackles and tied for the team-lead with three interceptions. He is also a threat on special teams with five career blocked kicks in his two seasons at UH.
Sophomore
Mike Sellers of 'Ewa Beach, O'ahu, appeared in all 13 games last season, making five starts at nickelback. He will enter fall camp as the No. 1 free safety. Sophomore
Bubba Poueu-Luna, a rising prospect in the secondary, came out of the spring as the top strong safety. Last season, the Temecula, Calif., native appeared in seven games, mainly on special teams.
The corner position is loaded with incoming talent as newcomers
Tony Grimes and
Ne'Quan Phillips, are expected to make immediate contributions. Grimes was a highly recruited prep prospect who signed with Mississippi out of high school. Phillips starred at Southridge High School in Florida.
The safety position features returnees
Charles Clay, a junior from Hilo, Hawai'i, and
Leroy Lutu, a senior from Mercer Island, Wash. Both saw extensive action on special teams last season. Clay recorded 15 tackles and three forced fumbles playing on all of UH's special teams units. Freshman
Marrell Jackson had 12 interceptions as a senior at Miramar High School.
Senior
Kawika Ornellas (Kapolei, O'ahu), is an experienced defender having made seven career starts at cornerback while sophomore corner
Dee Maggitt (Tacoma, Wash.), who started one game last season and posted one interception, also returns.
