MESA, Ariz. - The 2012 Western Athletic Conference baseball postseason awards were announced Tuesday, with University of Hawai'i shortstop Pi'ikea Kitamura named to the first team. The honors were selected by the conference coaches and announced at the WAC postseason banquet.
Kitamura had a fine season, adding offense to his already quality defensive game. He was second on the team with a .308 batting average and during WAC play hit .315. Kitamura posted a team-high 61 hits and added eight doubles and 28 RBI.
Pitcher
Matt Sisto, outfielder
Zack Swasey, and third baseman
Collin Bennett were named to the second team. Sisto finished the regular season with a career-high eight wins (8-3) and went undefeated in WAC play at 3-0. He also led the WAC in innings per game (6.85).
Swasey earned his second all-WAC honor in as many seasons. He batted .284 with a team-best 10 doubles. Swasey also recorded 16 hits and 24 RBI.
Bennett played his UH career mainly as an outfielder, but Coach Trapasso moved him to third base for his senior season. He responded by leading the team with a .326 batting average and hit three homeruns, two in one game against tournament top seed Sacramento State.
The No. 4 seed Rainbows open the WAC Tournament Wednesday against fifth-seeded Fresno State at 3:00 p.m. MT (12:00 p.m. HT) at Hohokam Stadium.
