Rainbows Close Series With Loss To Gonzaga

Box Score Box Score

SPOKANE, Wash. – Trevor Podratz crushed his first career homerun, but it wasn't enough as the University of Hawai'i baseball team lost to Gonzaga, 9-3, on Sunday at the Patterson Baseball Complex. The Rainbows drop to 14-11 while the Bulldogs improve to 16-6.

UH was done in by a pair of homeruns from Royce Bolinger, who hit 3-5 with two runs and four RBI. Podratz led the 'Bows with two hits, one run, and three RBI, and Zack Swasey and Collin Bennett both added two hits and one run scored.

Gonzaga opened the game with a pair of first inning runs. Bolinger pulled a Dowdy pitch through the left side of the infield to drive home Eric Lane (3 R) for the game's first run. One inning later though, Bennett doubled and on the next at bat Podratz belted his opposite way home run to tie the game.

GU wasted no time in recapturing the momentum and the lead. Marco Gonzales delivered a two-RBI base hit in the bottom of the second inning, and two innings later Bolinger hit his second and third homeruns of the series to give the Bulldogs a 7-2 lead after four innings.

Despite the loss, the 'Bows posted 11 total hits, their second double-figure hit total of the series. All but one position starter hit safely.

In what was projected to be a staff day, Kyle Dowdy (1-0) started on the mound for Hawai'i but his outing was short-lived. After allowing just one earned run in 15.2 innings pitched this season, he surrendered five today before leaving after two innings. Lawrence Chew, Jesse Moore, and Corey McDonald pitched a combined six innings to finish the game.

Billy Moon (2-1) pitched 6.1 innings for the win, allowing all three Hawai'i runs and 11 hits. Marco Gonzales added three hits, two runs, and two RBI.

The 'Bows will look to get back on track as they return home this week to face UC Davis. UH and UCD will play a four-game series at Les Murakami Stadium beginning Thursday night, Mar. 29.
