HONOLULU – University of Hawai'i women's volleyball coach
Dave Shoji has announced middle blocker
Brittany Hewitt will not return to the team for the 2012 season.
“This has been a really tough decision to make, but after discussing it with my family, I have decided not to play my final season,” said Hewitt. “I love every part of this program and I am so thankful for the impact the players, trainers, coaches, and fans have made on my life and for all of the memories. This is just something I need to do for myself.”
Hewitt, who will be graduating in May, was a force in the middle during her three seasons with the Rainbow Wahine. As a sophomore she was named AVCA Second Team All-American and CVU.com Blocker of the Year. She was also a two-time First Team All-WAC performer and was selected WAC Freshman of the Year in 2009.
“We're disappointed that Brittany won't be with us for her fifth year, but we wish her well in her future endeavors,” said Shoji. “She has brought so much to the program in her four years here and we are thankful for her contributions. She has been a model student, a leader on the court, has amazing character, and will be a success in anything she chooses to accomplish.”
Hewitt ranked in the Top 20 nationally in blocks every year, and led the nation in 2010 with 1.67 blocks per set. This past season she was far and away the WAC's top blocker with 126 blocks on the season, and holds the program rally scoring record with 16 blocks in one match.
“We will be hard-pressed to fill her spot,” added Shoji, “but this gives an opportunity for Kalei Adolpho,
Kristiana Tuaniga, and
Jade Vorster to gain more experience. In addition, all-American
Emily Hartong returns in the middle, although we may move her to the outside next season.”
