Spiker Falls In USTA/ITA Regional Consolation Semis

IRVINE, Calif. – University of Hawai'i tennis player Jared Spiker fell to Tyler Pham 6-4, 3-6, 10-2  in the consolation round semifinals of the USTA/ITA Regional Tennis Championships on Monday at Anteater Tennis Stadium on the campus of UC Irvine.

Spiker was just a win away from the tournament final which was completed today. Pham, who plays at UC Irvine, would go on to lose to Marco Comuzzo of Cal Poly.

Spiker's loss ended a quality run through the consolation round where he topped three competitors before his semifinal defeat. He rallied to top Jacob Johnson (UCSB) in the third round, then the next morning he beat Shiva Sangwan of San Diego State in similar fashion. Spiker won both matches via a third set tiebreaker. He was then dominant in his quarterfinal match, turning back Daniel Simko (LMU) before falling to Pham in the semifinal.

Spiker and his Warrior teammates conclude their fall tournament schedule and now set their sights on the spring collegiate season. First up will be two matches against BYU on Jan. 3 & 4 at the UH Tennis Complex.
