SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team started tournament action on Thursday, Oct. 18, in the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Tennis Championship hosted by San Diego State at the Barnes Tennis Center.
Nearly 100 players from 14 West Coast schools are competing in the five-day tournament. All five Rainbow Wahine saw singles action on the first day and four competed in doubles play in their main draws.
In singles,
Martina Kostalova and
Katarina Poljakova advanced from the round of 128 to round of 64. Kostalova defeated Tiffany Mai of Cal State Fullerton in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4. Poljakova advanced due to a bye. In round 64, Kostalova was defeated by Stephanie Hoffpauir of San Diego, 6-0, 6-2. In Poljakova's first match of the day, she defeated Sarah Cantlay of Long Beach State convincingly, 6-0, 6-1. Poljakova will advance to the round of 32, which will be played on Friday, at 9:30 a.m.
In doubles, the second pair of the Rainbow Wahine,
Xenia Suworowa and Poljakova advanced to the next round after defeating Shayne Austin and Hailey Johnson of Arizona, 8-6. Suworowa and Poljakova will take the court against Skyler Morton and Channelle Van Nguyen of UCLA on Friday, at 8:30 a.m. The other duo,
Rebecca Faltusz and Kostalova were defeated by Lorraine Cheung and Maria Pistalu of Cal State Northridge, 8-2.
The singles consolation round will begin Friday where Faltusz, Suworowa, and
Kelsey Daguio will compete after their losses on Thursday.
