HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i Warrior football team conducted its final scrimmage of the spring with the 2011 “Warrior Bowl” in front of a crowd of more than 1,000 fans Friday night at the Clarence T.C. Ching Field.

The defense dominated the annual intra-squad scrimmage, not allowing a single touchdown following nearly 60 offensive snaps. The defense recorded eight sacks—including three by sophomore linebacker Art Laurel and also snagged two interceptions.

Sophomore linebacker George Daily-Lyles, who recorded two sacks, credited defensive coordinator Dave Aranda for the performance.

“He's like a Jedi out there,” Daily-Lyles said. “He makes everything simple, breaking stuff down, frame-by-frame, play-by-play, hour-by-hour. Everything comes simple. We're out there hungry and ready to go.”

On offense, starting quarterback Bryant Moniz played two series and finished 6-of-8 for 69 yard and one interception. Junior slot back Jeremiah Ostrowski recorded three catches for 21 yards, while Billy Ray Stutzmann provided the offensive highlight of the night by high-wiring down the sideline for a beautiful 36-yard catch from Moniz.

Special team highlights included a 35-yard Samson Anguay punt return which ultimately set up a 38-yard field goal by Kenton Chun.

The offense conducted its best drive on the opening series as Moniz marched the team down to the 25-yard line. But that drive was extinguished by junior linebacker Jordan Monico's interception. That stand set the tone for the night as the defense was stout throughout, allowing just six plays of 10 yards or more. The offense versus defense portion of the scrimmage fittingly ended with a Gus Cunningham interception.

Special teams closed out the session with back-to-back-back field goals by Chun, Tyler Hadden and Kyle Niiro. The placekickers converted on all five of their field goal attempts on the evening.

“I thought the defense was way ahead of the offense,” head coach Greg McMackin said. “That's a normal situation. We made a lot of plays on defense. Our tackling is really good this time of the year and special teams was good, making every field goal.”

The "Warrior Bowl" was the final practice of spring camp for the Warriors. UH will return for fall practice in August, before opening its 2011 season at home against Colorado on September 3.
