Rainbows Drop Series Opener To Longhorns

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i baseball team lost to Texas tonight, 2-0, in the series opener between both teams. The Rainbows fall to 2-3 while the Longhorns improve to 4-2.  The contest was sold out (4684 tickets issued and 3720 turnstile count).

Taylor Jungmann (2-0) pitched a complete game for the win, allowing no runs on four hits with nine strikeouts. Matt Sisto (0-1) delivered a solid performance in the loss. He tossed six complete innings surrendering one earned run on six hits with four strikeouts. 

Mark Payton and Erich Weiss led the Longhorns at the plate, both recording two hits and one RBI. 

The 'Bows did not get their first hit until the fifth inning when Kolten Wong (1-4) bunted his way on base. Jungmann continued to dominate the Rainbow lineup though, while UT tacked on another run in the sixth inning to increase its lead to 2-0. 

In the eighth inning, the 'Bows finally got some action on the base paths. Consecutive base hits by Zack Swasey (1-3) and pinch hitter Sean Montplaiser gave Hawai'i runners on first and second with two outs. UH could not capitalize though, as Breland Almadova (0-4) was retired to end the inning. 

The 'Bows and Longhorns play game two of the series tomorrow, February 26. First pitch is set for 3:05 p.m.
