Wichmann Becomes School’s Sixth Academic All-American

University of Hawai'i multi-event athlete Annett Wichmann was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America women's track & field/cross country first team, the third consecutive year she has been named to either the first, second, or third teams.

Wichmann was a second-team pick in 2008 and third team selection in 2007. Earlier this season, the Jena, Germany native was named to the Academic All-District VIII first team for the third consecutive year. Just this week, Wichmann was named to the Western Athletic Conference's all-academic team for the fourth straight year.

Wichmann recently completed a remarkable four-year career last week with a seventh place finish in the heptathlon at the NCAA Championships. She also became the WAC's first four-time champion in the heptathlon as well as a three-time champion in the pentathlon. She concluded both conference championships by being named co-Field Athlete of the Meet and finished with a total of 13 career WAC medals.

Considered the most decorated track and field athlete in school history, Wichmann qualified for seven NCAA Championships and earned All-America distinction four times. She was the recipient of the Jack Bonham Award, given to UH's top senior male and female student-athlete. In addition, she is a nominee for the WAC's Stan Bates Award, which will be announced in the coming weeks.

With three Academic All-America awards, Wichmann broke the school record which she shared with former men's volleyball standout Costas Theocharidis, a two-time All-American in 2002 & '03, the latter of which he was selected as the At-Large Team Member of the Year.

Only five other student-athletes in school history have been named to the Academic All-America first team – Tracy Loo (softball, 2003), Chris Shinnick (football, 1997), Dejan Miladinovic (men's volleyball, 2002), Costas Theocharidis (men's volleyball, 2003), and Michael Kuebler (men's basketball, 2004). In all, UH student-athletes have earned 20 Academic All-America certificates.
