Lori Castillo announced the signing of six student-athletes for the 2009-10 season which includes, Brigitte Baker of McLean, Va.; Erika Lundber of Vallentuna, Sweden; Kaili Britos of Honolulu; Summer Galon-Mizusawa of Hilo, Hawai'i; Laura Polak of Victoria, British Columbia; and Brittany Bomar of Anchorage, Alaska.
“I'm very excited about this year's recruiting class,” Castillo said. “We've been able to sign student-athletes from all over, from here in Hawai'i to Alaska, Virginia, Canada, and Sweden. We also have a mix of high school freshman, who I believe are the future of the Rainbow Wahine golf program, and seasoned transfers, who will be able to help us right away.”
Baker was named the Fairfax County Female Athlete of the Year in 2009. A standout golfer at Langley High School for three years, she won the Libery District – an all-boys field – with rounds of 69 and 70. Baker capped her senior year at Langley by winning the Virginia State High School Girls Championships, an event in which she placed third during both her sophomore and junior seasons. A Washington Post all-Metro pick, Baker's other tournament championships include the 2008 Corsemax/Philadelphia AJGA, Mid-Atlantic PGA Junior Spring Fling, and Ladies' Club Champion at Reston National Golf Course. In 2007, Baker was runner-up at the Virginia State Golf Association Girls Championship.
Lundberg is a transfer from the University of Mobile, an NAIA school in Alabama. She helped the Lady Rams to a fourth place finish at the NAIA independent championships, where she placed fourth individually. Two weeks earlier, Lundberg captured medalist honors at the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference tournament. A nationally ranked tennis player as a youth in her native Sweden, Lundberg picked up golf several years ago and already boasts a win at the Under 21 Junior Masters in 2008 and was a member of Team Stockholm, who represented Sweden against Finland in 2008.
Britos of Kamehameha Schools-Kapalama, recently completed her high school career by finishing 18th at the HHSAA Girls State Championship in Maui after taking third at the ILH Championships. A captain for the Kamehameha Schools-Kapalama, Britos was a first-team all-league honoree and recipient of the school's student-athlete award for four years. She finished fourth at the Hawai'i State Women's Stroke Play Championships in 2008 and won the Turtle Bay Championships of the O'ahu Junior Tour Series.
Galon-Mizusawa of Waiakea High School, finished 10th at last week's HHSAA Girls State Championship after a seventh place finish in 2008. She also placed third at the BIIF Championships this season and was runner-up as a junior. As a junior, Galon-Mizusawa won two high school tournaments and placed runner-up three times. A veteran of the local junior golf scene, she won the Junior World Qualifier and Big Island Candies Junior in 2008 and Cindy Rarick Junior in 2007. In 2008, she won the USGA Women's Amateur Public Links Qualifier and placed 98th at the sectional tournament.
Polak, a nominee to participate in the Canada Summer Games for British Columbia, won the Dairy Queen Junior Girls championship in 2008. She also placed third in the Vancouver Island Junior Girls Championship that same year. In 2007, Polak won nine of 15 junior tournaments and was named the Junior Girls golfer of the year. She also won the Dale Shaw Trophy for the low gross for the year and was a member of British Columbia's Summer Games in 2006.
Bomar played two seasons at the University of Northern Iowa but took the 2008-09 season off. She played in a total of 11 tournaments for the Panthers during her freshman and sophomore seasons. In 2007 and '08, Bomar competed in the USGA Women's Amateur Public Links Championships and was the low qualifier out of the state of Alaska both years. In 2006, she won the Alaska State Match Play Championships, where she defeated Margaux Sheehan – the top-ranked golfer in the Big Sky Conference in 2007 – in the semifinals. As a junior golfer in her native Alaska, Bomar won the state amateur championship in 2006, was the state junior champion from 2002-04 and the state junior masters champion in 2001 and '03. Her father Billy Bomar is the director for the First Tee Program in Alaska.
