HONOLULU - With the completion of the Western Athletic Conference schedule, the 2009 University of Hawai`i football slate has taken shape. The Warriors will play a total of 13 games, including seven home contests at Aloha Stadium and two nationally televised contests.
The schedule features six teams that played in bowl games last season, including: Navy (EagleBank), Wisconsin (Champs Sports), Boise State (Poinsettia), Fresno State (New Mexico), Nevada (Humanitarian), and Louisiana Tech (Independence). For the second-straight year, UH has six road games, including three in the month of September.
“We have an exciting home schedule that features quality conference and non-conference opponents that I'm sure our fans will really enjoy watching us play,” head coach Greg McMackin said. “Additionally, we have some great contests on the road that will definitely challenge our players. Overall, I'm very pleased with the schedule and I look forward to preparing our team for the 2009 season.”
The 2009 season marks the
100th Anniversary of the inaugural year of UH football and fans can join the celebration early by
placing a $50 non-refundable deposit for new season tickets until June.
The cost for seven exciting home contests in 2009 is the same as the seven-game package in 2008 (
see schedule and season ticket prices below). Deposits for new season tickets can be paid online and are for seats in the upper sideline and end zone sections. Current season-ticket holders will be mailed renewal information in the next two weeks and new season tickets will go on sale in July.
The $50 non-refundable deposit (per order, not per ticket) can be applied to new season-ticket purchases only. Following the completion of the renewal process in late June, fans will be contacted in the order that their deposit was received to secure their seat assignments and finalize payment.
Hawai'i played its first football season in 1909 and the 2009 season will be UH's 93rd year of competition. The university did not play football from 1912-14, 1942-45, and in 1961.
Hawai`i opens the 2009 season at home Friday, Sept 4, against Central Arkansas. The Bears finished last year with a 10-2 record and 15
th in the Football Championship Subdivision national rankings.
The Warriors will then play their next three games on the road. The Warriors play back-to-back non-conference games at Washington State (Sept. 12) and UNLV (Sept. 19). The Warriors and Cougars, who meet for the second-straight season, will play their game in Seattle at Qwest Field, home of the NFL's Seattle Seahawks. UH, meanwhile, plays at UNLV for the second time in three years.
Following the team's first bye on Sept. 26, UH is back on the road for its WAC opener at Louisiana Tech on Wednesday, Sept. 30, a game that will be nationally televised on ESPN2.
After a bye on Oct. 3, the Warriors will play their remaining nine games on successive weeks, with seven-straight WAC games. UH will face Fresno State (Oct. 10), defending league champion Boise State (Oct. 24), Utah State (Nov. 7) and New Mexico State (Nov. 14) at home, while facing Idaho (Oct. 17), Nevada (Oct. 31) and San Jose State (Nov. 21) on the road.
UH closes out the regular season with a pair of non-conference home games against Navy (Nov. 28) and a nationally televised game versus Wisconsin (Dec. 5). Navy, under the leadership of former UH quarterback Ken Niumatololo, will be making just its second-ever visit to the Islands and first since 1999. UH will face Wisconsin for the sixth time, with the last meeting coming in 2005 at Aloha Stadium. The game will be televised on either ESPN or ESPN2.
